MWC and State of Consumer Electronics in 2023
I’ll save you time; click the button below for a summary for MWC (formerly Mobile World Congress) 2023.
Now, let’s talk about what MWC and the consumer electronics industry is in 2023: they’re looking for the next big thing. I attended MWC for years between 2016-2020 pre-pandemic; it was a bloody exciting event. That’s because this time was the peak smartphone era in terms of innovation.
Today times changed, smartphones got good but boring, and nothing has come along to replace them. They might never be replaced. But what I do know is that the consumer electronics space is in desperate need of something new.
Perhaps software in the form of the apps and services that connect devices are the new smartphone. Think about that - software is the new hardware - is a concept that perhaps means we need to accept that hardware is simply a terminal to connect to the internet and forthcoming ‘metaverse’ if that happens.

Marketing AI
I’ve been playing with ChatGPT religiously like everyone else and since I’m a marketer, I’ve come to realize that maybe we’ll all still have jobs after-all.
Marketing is creativity but it’s also becoming increasingly programmatic. This plays into the narrative that AI replaces large swathes of digital marketing from ad buying to posting on social media. But does it?
I’m increasingly of the opinion that AI is like any technology we’ve seen before and not some new paradigm. The mainframe, PC, laptop, smartphone in hardware and email, ecommerce and social media in software disrupted incumbent products and companies, creating multibillion dollar fortunes in the process.
AI will change and create huge new opportunities. But at the end of the day, it’s a tool that humans will master, not likely something that will replace us. For me, if you aren’t using AI tools like ChatGPT and others in your workflow, you wont be replaced. But you will fall behind others in the workplace or industry at large.
