iPhone 14 Meh, Ultra Watch Wow
The iPhone 14 Series reviews are out and once again, it’s probably the best phone on the market. Big display, nice industrial design, iOS still smooth as butter. And photos have improve again with some better selfie camera and video performance. Outstanding.
What’s even more outstanding however and the surprise of the year has been the unveil of the Apple Watch Ultra - a beast to put it mildy. I tried on this watch and it’s ridiculously large, especially for some folks with smaller wrists like myself.
For me though what it represents is the ongoing leaps Apple (and the industry at large tbf) is making at miniaturisation. It’s literally an iPhone on your wrist now - that same gorgeous display, wireless functionality and for the first time in a smartwatch IMO, battery life that’s acceptable for 2+ day use.

The Twitch Decline and Creator Payouts
The Verge recently published a piece on the decline of Twitch in relative terms with respect to creators on the platform and payouts. I think it’s eye opening for two reasons; only a few years ago, Twitch was THE gaming social network. Secondly, it’s owned by Amazon, a fact people sometimes forget.
Twitch invented the streaming social genre in many ways but it’s suffering as the other big platforms pivot to video. I don’t think throwing money at the problem in the form of creator payouts fixes that. Indeed, perhaps Twitch has plateaued due to the fact they haven’t been able to move beyond gamers ironically.
Case in point: YouTube. Not only has YouTube got almost every vertical of video now, it’s powering ahead into new categories like podcasting. Maybe then Twitch has just hit it’s natural mid-life crisis? Who knows.
